Here you’ll find some frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your breathwork journey.

Breathwork is a powerful tool for managing stress and improving overall well-being. To understand why breathwork is effective, let's first explore the relationship between the nervous system and breathing.
Our bodies have an autonomic nervous system that controls things we don't consciously think about, like our heart rate, digestion, and stress response. When we encounter a stressful situation, our body automatically goes into "fight or flight" mode, releasing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This can lead to shallow breathing and other physical symptoms, like increased heart rate and decreased digestion.
The good news is that we can hack the stress response with our breath! Breathing is the only part of the autonomic nervous system that we can consciously control. By changing our breathing patterns, we can reduce stress and improve physical and mental well-being.
At Rising Phoenix Breathwork, we offer group sessions that guide you through intentional breathing exercises to help release tension, reduce anxiety, and reset your nervous system. We also offer resources like books and podcasts to help you continue learning about the latest neuroscience and trauma research related to breathwork.
If you're new to breathwork, we encourage you to try a simple exercise: breathe like you're running for 60 seconds, then take deep, slow breaths for 60 seconds. Notice how your body feels after each exercise - this is just the beginning of what breathwork can do for you!

It is encouraged to avoid a heavy meal before breathwork. It can be nice to have a snack afterwards.
-
Breathwork is generally safe and beneficial for most people. However, we don't recommend it if you are pregnant, have a history of seizures, brain aneurysms, torn retina, glaucoma, untreated high blood pressure, heart disease, extreme PTSD, or are recovering from surgery. If you're under the care of a physician for any of these conditions, please consult with them before performing breathwork.

We use the Elemental Rhythm Breakthrough Experience and Elemental Flow, which combines various breath patterns, music, scent, and touch to create a unique, transformative experience. These breathing patterns have been used for centuries by many cultures and are backed by scientific research.

When you arrive there will be places set for you to choose from. The facilitator will tell you what to expect and then you will practice the breathing patterns. We will start by moving the body to prepare you for meditation. Then you will lay down with and put your eye mask on. We will play music and prompt you when to breathe.
The breath patterns and holds are designed to calm the prefrontal cortex, allowing you to process without excessive thinking or chatter. The intensity of your experience will depend on how deeply you breathe and your willingness to let go. Each experience is unique, and participants report a wide range of benefits, including finding inner peace, going into deep meditation, releasing big emotions, processing emotional pain, releasing trauma, pain relief, and feeling safe in their bodies.
After the breathwork you will be guided through a healing meditation. At the end you will have a chance to journal and share about your experience if you’d like.

It can be challenging to describe what the power of breath means, and that's okay. Give yourself a few days to process, and then explore the resources on the Science of Breathing. Remember, you did some hard work, and it's essential to take care of yourself.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. We're happy to help and look forward to sharing the transformative power of breathwork with you.

Many people carry past experiences and trauma in the body. Breathwork accesses these old experiences and allows them to be released. Its very important to take care of yourself. Stretch, take a hot bath and give yourself time to process. Over the next few days you will feel a release of that tension and will feel better than ever. Notice any awarenesses that come up in relation to the discomfort in your body.

Kids 5-15 are welcome to attend the Big & Little Breathwork sessions. However, not all of Rising Phoenix Breathwork’s sessions are appropriate for all ages. People over the age of 15 are welcome to attend any session. Teens younger than 15 will need preapproval to attend.
